The Turkish pioneer who broke the NBA's geographic boundaries
In short: In 2000, a 6 ft 10 in forward from Istanbul did something no Turkish-born player had ever done. Hedo Türkoğlu didn't just enter the NBA; he transformed from a draft pick into an award-winning star and a central figure in international basketball history.
Selected 16th overall in the 2000 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings, Hedo Türkoğlu entered the league as the first Turkish-born player in NBA history. His early career was defined by high-level versatility, playing alongside European legends like Vlade Divac and Peja Stojaković. By the 2007–08 season, his ascent reached a peak when he was named the NBA's Most Improved Player, a season where he started all 82 games and recorded career-high averages of 19.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists.
Türkoğlu's career was marked by significant milestones and notable friction. He reached the NBA Finals with the Orlando Magic in 2009, leading the team with 18.0 points per game in that series. However, his tenure with the Toronto Raptors in 2010 was marred by a disciplinary benching after he was spotted at a nightclub in Toronto's Yorkville district. Later, in 2013, he faced a 20-game suspension after testing positive for methenolone, an incident he attributed to taking medicine from a trainer in Turkey that contained the banned substance.
Beyond the court, Türko<0xC2><0xA0>loğlu's identity is a tapestry of Balkan and Turkish heritage. Born in Istanbul to Bosniak parents from North Macedonia, he is fluent in Turkish, Serbian, and Bosnian. Following his 2015 departure from the NBA after 15 seasons, he moved into sports management, leading the Turkish Basketball Federation as president from October 2016. His enduring impact on the sport was cemented with his induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2026.
