How a teenage baker became a Daytime Emmy powerhouse
In short: Before she was a mainstay on daytime television, Heather Tom was baking cookies in Los Angeles to support her dreams. From a childhood move to Seattle to becoming one of the most decorated actresses in soap opera history, her journey is a masterclass in persistence and versatility.
Born in 1975 in Hinsdale, Illinois, Heather Tom’s path to stardom was marked by significant family shifts. When she was eleven, her family relocated from Chicago to Seattle, Washington, due to her father's job. A year later, her mother moved the three children to Los Angeles to pursue acting during pilot season, a move that led to the family's permanent relocation and her parents' eventual divorce. Her siblings, David and Nicholle Tom, are also professional actors. During her youth, she studied piano and performed at the Seattle Children's Theatre.
Tom's professional ascent began early with commercials and modeling, but her breakthrough came in December 1990 when she debuted as Victoria Newman on The Young and the Restless. The industry swiftly noticed her skill; in 1993, she secured her initial Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actress. Over the decades, she has become a titan of the genre, earning a total of six Daytime Emmy Awards—a feat that ties her for the most wins by any soap actress. She also appeared in the film Undone and the thriller The Rival. Her versatility is further evidenced by her Broadway debut in the play Prymate.
Beyond her acting, Tom has demonstrated significant range by transitioning into directing. Directing various prominent shows, she has overseen episodes of Good Trouble, Dynasty, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful. Her career is also defined by a deep commitment to advocacy, serving on the board of Planned Parenthood and founding Daytime for Planned Parenthood to support reproductive rights and equality. In addition to her television work, she has directed short films like Serenity and Bigfoot's Love Slave. She also co-founded the Creative Outlet Theatre in Los Angeles.
