How a young student's audition led to a major soap opera breakthrough
In short: At just 19, Mavournee Hazel was balancing university studies with a life-changing audition. After a rigorous multi-round process for the Australian soap Neighbours, she moved cities in just three days to transform her career from a student to a household name.
Born on 20 March 1996, Mavournee Hazel began preparing for a life in the spotlight long before her breakout. At approximately eight years old, she started a three-year course at the theatrical agency SA Casting. Her early training was furthered by mentorship from actress Doris Younane, whom Hazel met while attending a guest lecture.
Her professional ascent accelerated in 2015 when she auditioned for the role of Piper Willis on the long-running soap opera Neighbours. After a successful audition and two subsequent rounds of testing, she relocated from Sydney to Melbourne within three days to begin filming. Her performance in this part marked a pivotal career milestone, leading to a 2018 Inside Soap Awards nomination for Best Daytime Star.
Hazel's career is marked by a deliberate pursuit of variety. After leaving Neighbours in 2019 to seek new challenges and distance herself from the persona of Piper, she underwent a radical hair transformation for her role as Zoe Sailer in Halifax: Retribution. This was followed by roles in the Apple TV+ series Shantaram, where she worked alongside Charlie Hunnam, and the 2023 thriller Home Kills.
Beyond the screen, Hazel has expanded her brand through modeling for Mimco and serving as an ambassador for Grey Goose vodka. Her versatility is further evidenced by her casting in NCIS: Sydney, the first international edition of the franchise, where she plays forensic scientist Bluebird "Blue" Gleeson.
