A piano tuner discovered a secret fortune hidden inside a donated musical instrument
In short: While servicing a piano at a Shropshire college, a tuner uncovered fabric bundles containing gold coins. This discovery triggered a formal investigation under the Treasure Act to determine the origins of the hoard and its rightful owner.
In 2016, piano tuner Martin Backhouse was working on an instrument donated to Bishop’s Castle Community College in Shropshire when he found several tightly wrapped bundles. Upon inspection, he revealed stacks of gold sovereigns dating from the turn of the 20th century.
Recognizing the significance of the find, Backhouse and the college reported the discovery to the local Coroner and a Finds Liaison Officer. The case was processed under the Treasure Act, which is managed by the British Museum, initiating a search for the hoard's original owner.
