In short: The Federated States of Micronesia is a modern nation of 600 islands, but its history stretches back millennia. Before colonial powers arrived, the island of Yap anchored a sophisticated maritime network known as the Yapese Empire, a system of tribute and trade that connected distant atolls across 1,500 kilometers.

Long before the Federated States of Micronesia emerged as a sovereign nation in 1979, the region was defined by diverse cultural and political structures. Central to this was the Yapese Empire, which operated from approximately 1500 BC. This was not a traditional state but a maritime network centered on the Gagil municipality of Yap. Through a relationship called sawey, smaller islands provided tribute—such as coconut rope, mats, and shells—to the paramount chief of Gagil. In return, the main island offered protection during natural disasters and essential resources like canoes and turmeric.

The nature of this empire remains a subject of academic debate. While some researchers, such as Lessa, have suggested the system was built on conquest or economic coercion, others argue it was a mutually beneficial arrangement. This network facilitated long-distance travel, including voyages to Palau to quarry the famous Rai stone currency disks. The social fabric of Yap itself was equally intricate, characterized by a rigid caste system where village status was historically determined by military success. This fluidity ended during the 20th-century German occupation, which prohibited inter-village conflict and effectively froze the social rankings in place.

The modern political identity of the islands was forged in the aftermath of World War II. Administered by the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1947, the region transitioned toward independence in the late 20th century. Today, the Federated States of Micronesia maintains a unique Compact of Free Association with the United States. This agreement provides the U.S. with exclusive strategic access to the nation's land and waterways, while in return, the U.S. provides financial assistance and allows for the uninhibited travel of Micronesian citizens, cementing a relationship that has persisted since the mid-1980s.
