Why NFL rivalries are rarely about geography and mostly about scheduling
In short: While fans love a local grudge match, true NFL rivalries are often manufactured by the league's complex rotation. From the 'Butt Fumble' to the 'Battle of Ohio,' these intense matchups rely more on divisional placement and historical mergers than simple proximity.
In the NFL, purely geographic rivalries are rare. Unlike Major League Baseball, where divisional teams play each other frequently, the NFL's scheduling formula prioritizes divisional play and rotating inter-conference matchups. This means crosstown rivals, such as those in New York or Los and Angeles, often find themselves in opposing conferences, preventing frequent meetings. To maintain scheduling diversity, existing NFL regulations mandate that clubs sharing a metropolitan region belong to different conferences.
Many of the league's most storied tensions are rooted in historical shifts and personnel. The 'Battle of Ohio' between the Bengals and Browns exists because Browns coach Paul Brown founded the Bengals franchise using the same shade of orange for their uniforms. Similarly, the Browns-Ravens rivalry is fueled by the bitterness of the original Browns moving to Baltimore to become the Ravens. Other rivalries, like the AFC East's clash between the Bills and Patriots, have seen massive shifts in power, moving from the lopsided dominance of the Brady-Belichick era to a more balanced competition led by players like Josh Allen.
The intensity of these matchups is often cemented by high-stakes moments. The 'Butt Fumble' between the Jets and Patriots remains one of the most humiliating moments in professional football history. Meanwhile, the AFC North features physically punishing games, such as the 2005 Steelers-Bengals playoff match involving a significant injury to Carson Palmer. Whether driven by the 'Turnpike Rivalry' between the Browns and Steelers or the recent divisional battles in the AFC South, these connections are maintained through a rigid, multi-year cycle of divisional and conference scheduling.
