From a high school Eagle Scout to the highest-paid guard in NFL history
In short: Landon Dickerson’s path to professional football stardom was defined by resilience through repeated injuries and a remarkable positional transition. After overcoming multiple setbacks in college, he reinvented himself as a center at Alabama before becoming a cornerstone of the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line and securing a record-breaking contract extension.
Born on September 30, 1998, in Hickory, North Carolina, Landon Dickerson’s athletic journey began with high-level recognition as a four-star recruit. His collegiate career at Florida State was marked by significant physical challenges; he suffered season-ending injuries during his freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Despite these hurdles, he earned his undergraduate degree and transferred to Alabama as a graduate student, seeking a fresh start for his final two seasons of eligibility.
At Alabama, Dickerson demonstrated immense versatility. Although he began as a right guard, he was moved to center—a position he had never played—four games into his first season. He excelled, eventually earning unanimous All-America honors and the Rimington Trophy as the nation's best center in 2020. His grit was on full display during the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship; despite suffering ligament damage in his right knee during the SEC Championship game, he returned to the field for the final snap of Alabama's 52-24 victory over Ohio State.
Drafted 37th overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021, Dickerson quickly adapted to the professional level. He stepped into a starting role at left guard early in his rookie season and soon became a fixture of the Eagles' offensive front. His impact was recognized with a Pro Bowl selection in 2022, a year in which the team achieved a franchise-record 14 wins. By March 2024, his trajectory reached a new peak when he signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension, establishing him as the highest-paid guard in NFL history.
The narrative of Dickerson's career is one of overcoming physical adversity to achieve elite status. From his early days as an Eagle Scout to his pivotal role in the Eagles' success, including a championship win in Super Bowl LIX, his story underscores the value of adaptability. His ability to master a new position mid-career and maintain high performance levels remains a defining characteristic of his professional identity.
