From NFL quarterback to real estate broker: the journeyman career of Mike Glennon
In short: He was once the highly touted third-round pick for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a player destined for stardom. But after a decade of navigating the high-pressure volatility of the NFL, Mike Glennon traded the gridiron for the property market.
Mike Glennon’s football journey began with immense promise. A standout at Westfield High School in Virginia, he led the Bulldogs to an undefeated 15–0 season and a state championship. In 2008, Rivals.com ranked him as the country's third-highest recruiting quarterback. At NC State, he transitioned from a backup to a prolific starter, culminating in a 2012 season where he threw for over 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns.
His professional career, which began with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2013 NFL draft, was defined by the life of a professional journeyman. While he earned a spot on the Pro Football Writer's Association's All-Rookie Team, his time in Tampa Bay was marked by periods of both individual success and team struggle. He moved through several organizations, including the Chicago Bears, where he signed a significant three-year, $45 million contract in 2017, only to be benched in favor of a rookie.
During his final years, Glennon offered experienced backup support to the Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Oakland Raiders. Despite flashes of competence—such as scoring his first career rushing touchdown while with the Giants in 2020—the instability of injuries and roster shifts characterized his later years. In May 2023, Glennon retired from professional football, pivoting to a new career as a real estate broker, utilizing the business management expertise he gained during his graduate studies at NC State.
