From unranked walk-on to NFL Pro Bowler: the improbable rise of Hunter Renfrow
In short: He arrived at Clemson weighing just 155 pounds, overlooked by major programs. Yet, this two-star recruit transformed from an unheralded walk-on into a national champion and a professional standout, proving that grit can overcome even the most significant physical disadvantages.
James Hunter Renfrow’<0xC2>s journey began at Socastee High School in South Carolina, where he played quarterback under his father, Tim. Despite his talent, he was rated only as a two-star recruit by Rivals.com. While schools like Appalachian State and Wofford offered scholarships, Renfrow chose a different path, enrolling at Clemson University as a walk-on. At the time, he stood 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed a mere 155 pounds.
His ascent was marked by steady physical and competitive growth. After taking a redshirt in 2014, he increased his weight to 176 pounds by 2015, earning a scholarship. Renfrow became a central figure in Clemson's success, notably catching the game-winning touchdown from Deshaun Watson with just one second remaining in the 2017 National Championship against Alabama. His collegiate career culminated in winning the 2018 Burlsworth Trophy, an honor specifically recognizing the best player who began their career as a walk-on.
Renfrow transitioned to the NFL via the 2019 draft, selected by the Oakland Raiders in the fifth round. He quickly established himself as a reliable receiver, culminating in a massive 2021 season where he set career highs with 103 receptions, 1,038 yards, and 9 touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl selection. Though his career has seen fluctuations—including injuries, a $32 million contract extension in 2022, and stints with the Panthers—his trajectory remains a testament to the impact of the unheralded underdog.
