The horse who redefined the limits of Grade 1 racing
In short: Imagine a racehorse so dominant that he broke a world record for elite victories, only to be eclipsed by a champion just five years later. Hurricane Fly wasn't just a winner; he was a generational talent who transformed from a struggling flat racer in France into a legendary hurdle champion in Ireland.
Originally bred in Ireland by the Italian Agricola Del Parco, Hurricane Fly was intended for flat racing. He began his career in France under trainer Jean-Louis Pelletan, where he achieved only moderate success, winning twice in ten starts. It wasn't until late 2007, when he was sold to George Creighton and moved to the stable of Willie Mullins in County Carlow, Ireland, that his true potential was unlocked for National Hunt events.
The transition to hurdles saw a meteoric rise. After a successful novice season, he became a powerhouse in the Champion Hurdle. Following a 2011 victory at Cheltenham, he secured that same honour again in 2013, marking the initial time a horse had reclaimed the trophy twice within thirty-eight years. During this peak, he amassed a staggering 16 Grade 1 victories by April 2013, equaling a record shared by Kauto Star and John Henry before taking sole possession of the record in November 2013.
Hurricane Fly retired in August 2015 with a total of 22 Grade 1 wins, a figure that stood as the world record until it was equaled by the mare Winx in October 2018. His career was defined by high-stakes rivalries, most notably against the horse Jezki, whom he defeated in several pivotal matches. Mullins famously described the gelding as "the horse of a generation" before he retired to the Irish National Stud, where he lived until his death in 2026.
His legacy is cemented by his versatility and longevity. From his early days as a two-year-old in France to his final competitive season, he proved capable of handling diverse conditions and distances. He remains a primary example of how a change in training philosophy and environment can redefine an athlete's career trajectory.
