From childhood neighbors to electronicore: the turbulent evolution of I See Stars
In short: Formed in 2006 by childhood friends in Michigan, I See Stars has navigated lineup shifts, legal arrests, and a seven-year hiatus. Their journey from heavy metalcore to EDM-infused rock reveals a band constantly redefining its sonic boundaries and internal structure.
The foundation of I See Stars was built on long-standing local ties. Lead vocalist Devin Oliver, keyboardist Andrew Oliver, guitarist Brent Allen, and bassist Jeff Valentine all grew up in the same Michigan neighborhood, having known each other since elementary school. While the band officially formed in 2006, their early years were marked by a rapid stylistic evolution and significant personnel changes. Their initial persona emerged through MySpace, a site hosting various unpolished demos and a self-titled EP. Prior to joining Sumerian Records in 2008, the Green Light Go! had been issued. EP in 2007.
The band's early discography shows a clear trajectory toward increased aggression. Their 2009 debut, 3-D, reached number 176 on the Billboard 200. By 2012, the release of Digital Renegade signaled a stylistic shift, and the 2013 album New Demons integrated even heavier EDM elements. This period also saw significant upheaval; keyboardist and vocalist Zach Johnson departed in 2009, only to return in 2010 after Chris Moore left due to artistic differences. During this era, the band's lineup saw the brief tenure of Chris Moore, who joined as a screamer after Zach Johnson's initial departure. They also expanded their reach through collaborations, such as appearing on a track by the dubstep producer BARE.
Beyond musical shifts, the band's history includes notable external pressures. In 2012, all members were arrested in Saline County, Kansas, for possession and intent to use hallucinogenic drugs. They also faced digital interference when their Facebook page was hijacked in 2 and promoted Islamist propaganda. After a nearly seven-year hiatus following 2018's acoustic EP, the band teased a return in 2024 with the single 'Split,' eventually releasing their sixth studio album, The Wheel, in September 2025. The band's recent resurgence follows a period of significant activity, including a 2019 tour with Kayzo. They also celebrated a decade of their debut work with a specialized acoustic tour in 2021.
