In short: Most NHL players enter the league through the draft, a structured pipeline for elite talent. Igor Ozhiganov defied this convention. By navigating the complexities of Russian junior systems and international trades, he proved that persistence can bridge the gap between being overlooked and becoming an NHL regular.

Ozhiganov's journey began in the prestigious CSKA Moscow organization, where he developed his skills as a defenseman. Despite his development within one of Russia's most storied hockey systems, he remained undrafted by any NHL team—a significant hurdle for players seeking to enter North American professional leagues. He spent several seasons establishing his reputation in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), playing for clubs including CSKA Moscow, Amur Khabarovsk, and Sibir Novosibirsk.

The turning point occurred in 2017 when Ozhiganov entered negotiations with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although rumors of a signing persisted throughout the 2017–18 season, he chose to remain in the KHL with CSKA Moscow for another year. It wasn't until May 17, 2018, that he finally signed a one-year, entry-level contract with Toronto. This move allowed him to transition from being an overlooked prospect to a regular on the blueline during the first half of the 2018–19 season.

His time in the NHL was marked by both success and friction. He scored his first goal against the Boston Bruins on November 26, 2018, but eventually fell out of favor with head coach Mike Babcock. After being a healthy scratch for 12 of the final 19 games of that season—including all seven playoff matches—he returned to Russia in May 2019. Since then, his career has been defined by high-profile trades between KHL giants like Ak Bars Kazan and SKA Saint Petersburg, eventually landing him with HC Dynamo Moscow in July 2023.
