In short: Sergei Bobrovsky entered the NHL without being drafted and with limited English. Today, he stands as one of the most successful Russian goaltenders in history, boasting two Vezina Trophies and back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the Florida Panthers.

Bobrovsky's ascent was not a straightforward one. Despite being overlooked in the 2006 NHL entry draft due to the complexities of signing Russian players at the time, he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers on 6 May 2010. At only 22 years and 17 days old, he left an instant mark by becoming the Flyers' youngest goaltender to secure a victory in a season opener on 7 October 2010. He initially joined the North American professional circuit after playing four seasons for Metallurg Novokuznetsk. His debut victory came against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Consol Energy Center.

His career reached new heights during his tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets. During the 2012–13 season, he won his first Vezina Trophy, and he secured a second in 2016–17 after posting a 41–17–5 record. His dominance was so pronounced that he was one of only two goaltenders to rank in the top five across every major statistical category that year. He achieved these accolades while playing for the Blue Jackets. This period included a franchise-record season for wins by a goaltender.

A major career milestone occurred in 2019 when he inked a $70 million, seven-year deal with the Florida Panthers. After facing scrutiny regarding his contract value during a period of inconsistent results, Bobrovsky led the Panthers to consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025. By February 2023, he had already surpassed Evgeni Nabokov to become the winningest Russian goaltender in NHL history. His performance during the 2023 playoffs helped the team advance through the Eastern Conference Final. This included a marathon game that remains one of the longest in league history.

As of 2026, Bobrovsky sits seventh on the all-time list for most wins by any goaltender in the league, cementing his legacy as a premier force in professional ice hockey. He achieved this milestone by surpassing the record previously held by Evgeni Nabokov.
