The meteoric rise and complex legacy of NHL first overall pick Nail Yakupov
In short: Selected first overall in the 2012 NHL draft, Nail Yakupov was once the most anticipated prospect in hockey. Yet, his career trajectory shifted from NHL stardom to a nomadic journey across the KHL. His story remains a cautionary tale about the immense pressure and volatility facing young professional athletes.
Born in 1993, Nail Yakupov emerged from the Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk junior program before moving to North America in 2010. His explosive scoring ability in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sarnia Sting earned him the nickname Yak Attack and made him the top-rated prospect for the 2012 NHL entry draft. Despite a contentious interview process with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Edmonton Oilers selected him first overall in June 2012. He holds the distinction of being the first Tatar and only Muslim player ever chosen first in the NHL draft, surpassing the previous record held by Nazem Kadri.
Yakupov’s NHL career began during the 2012–13 lockout, which complicated his transition. After an initial stint in the KHL was blocked by eligibility disputes involving Hockey Canada and his existing entry-level contract, he returned to the Oilers in January 2013. He showed flashes of brilliance, leading all rookies with 17 goals and 31 points during his debut season. However, his performance eventually stagnated. After trades to the St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche, and hampered by injuries and limited ice time, he departed the NHL in 2018 to return to Russia.
His post-NHL career saw him play for several KHL clubs, including SKA Saint Petersburg, Vityaz, Amur Khabarovsk, and Avangard Omsk. While he contributed to Avangard Omsk’s Gagarin Cup victory in 2021, his later years were defined by frequent trades and persistent injury struggles. Today, Yakupov is often cited as one of the most significant draft busts in NHL history, a label that contrasts sharply with his early junior dominance. His path highlights the thin margin between projected greatness and the harsh realities of professional sports, where early promise does not always translate into sustained success at the highest level.
