In short: Formed in 1998 by drummer Dave Chavarri, Ill Niño rose to fame with massive nu metal sales. However, behind the music lies a turbulent history of lineup shifts, legal battles over business practices, and a bitter dispute that nearly ended the band's identity.

The band's journey began in May 1998 when Chavarri founded the group under the name El Niño. By April 1999, they had rebranded as Ill Niño, a Spanglish play on words meaning "ill child." Their debut album, Revolution Revolución, released on September 18, 2001, became a significant success, selling over 350,000 copies worldwide within its first two years. The group's early sound helped them secure a deal with Roadrunner Records in 2000. This success was bolstered by opening for acts like Soulfly and Kittie during their formative years.

Despite this momentum, the band's history is marked by constant personnel changes and legal friction. In 2019, a major rift emerged when Chavarri announced the departure of several members, including vocalist Cristian Machado. This was immediately disputed by the departing members, who vowed to continue as Ill Niño. By March 2019, legal paperwork revealed accusations against Chavarri, alleging he used his position as manager to mismanage funds and deny members access to financial records. The legal conflict intensified when former members filed lawsuits accusing Chavarri of pocketing tour advances and falsifying documents. These disputes highlighted deep-seated tensions regarding the band's financial management.

A settlement in March 2020 allowed Chavarri and bassist Lazaro Pina to continue using the Ill Niño name, while Machado and others formed Lions at the Gate. The band's instability continued through the decade; Marc Rizzo rejoined as a permanent member in 2021, only to depart again in 2024. While the band continues to release singles like "Born To Suffer" in 2026, the highly anticipated album IllMortals has faced multiple delays since its initial announcement in 2022. The group's musical style has been variously categorised as Latin metal, alternative metal, and metalcore. Their diverse sound draws inspiration from artists ranging from Metallica to Sade.
