The Belarusian underdog who broke a two-decade title drought
In short: For nearly twenty years, no Belarusian player had secured an ATP singles title. That changed in 2021 when Ilya Ivashka, a qualifier, surged through the Winston-Salem Open to claim his place in history and reach the world's top 50.
Ilya Ivashka's ascent to the upper echelons of professional tennis was marked by several significant breakthroughs. After entering the top 150 in early 2018 following a semifinal run in Marseille, he reached the top 100 in August of that year. His most defining moment arrived in 2021, a year that saw him reach a career-high ranking of world No. 53 by the end of August.
The pinnacle of his career occurred at the Winston-Salem Open in 2021. Entering as a qualifier, Ivashka defeated Mikael Ymer in a decisive 56-minute victory to secure his first ATP Tour singles title. This landmark victory marked his status as the inaugural Belarusian to claim an ATP Tour singles trophy since Max Mirnyi in 2003.
Beyond his singles success, Ivashka has proven to be a formidable competitor against the world's elite. He holds a 2–16 record against players who were ranked in the top 10 at the time of their matches. His peak singles ranking reached world No. 40 on 20 June 2022, while his doubles career saw him reach a high of world No. 317 in June 2023.
The Belarusian professional has also been a consistent presence in major tournaments, notably reaching the fourth round of the US Open in 2022 and the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2021. Despite facing setbacks, such as a leg injury that forced him to withdraw from several 2022 tournaments, he remains the current No. 1 Belarusian player.
