The $1.26 billion price tag of elite athletic development
In short: IMG Academy is more than a sports complex; it is a high-stakes laboratory for professional talent. From training NBA draftees to hosting entire WNBA seasons, this Florida institution has transformed the pipeline of American sports into a multi-billion dollar corporate enterprise.
Founded on the roots of the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in 1978, IMG Academy evolved into a massive 450-acre preparatory boarding school and sports training facility. Its growth was aggressive: it expanded to 190 acres by 2002 and continued acquiring land through 2014 to support a sprawling portfolio of programs. The institution serves as a hub for professional and collegiate training, hosting everything from corporate retreats to year-round camps for athletes ranging from grade six to post-graduate students.
The academy's influence on professional sports is measurable. It has produced icons like Serena Williams and Andre Agassi, and more recently, it pioneered pathways for high schoolers to enter the NBA directly. In 2018, Anfernee Simons became the first American to be selected for the NBA draft directly after graduating from high school since 2005. The school also hosts a Professional Basketball Combine to measure and transition talent into the NBA, G League, or international circuits.
However, the academy's prestige has faced modern scrutiny. In 2026, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) fined the school $1.72 million for accepting tuition from students linked to a Mexican drug trafficking organization. The Treasury Department cited a 'reckless disregard' for sanctions screenings. Despite these hurdles, the facility remains a titan of the industry, recently sold by Endeavor to BPEA EQT for $1.26 billion in 2023, and continues to expand into new sports like wrestling and softball.
The facility's versatility is its hallmark. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it hosted the entire 2020 WNBA season. It also served as a critical residency for U.S. Soccer's national teams before closing its specific Bradenton Academy in 2017. Today, it balances academic rigor with a massive infrastructure of courts, pools, and fields designed to produce the next generation of global sports stars.
