From Eagle Owls to Gamecocks: The century-long evolution of Alabama football
In short: Before they were a powerhouse in Conference USA, Jacksonville State's football program underwent a radical identity shift. A change in colors and a new nickname transformed a late 19th-century squad into the Fighting Gamecocks we recognize today.
The origins of Jacksonville State University football trace back to the late 19th century, though the program's first official team was fielded in 1904. In those early years, the team operated under a different identity, known as the Eagle Owls. During this era, the team wore blue and gold, and their primary rivals included Troy University and Samford University—the latter of which was then known as Howard College. One of the most enduring legacies from this period is the rivalry with Samford, a series that began in 1904 and has seen Jacksonville State lead with a record of 23–21–2.
A pivotal transformation occurred just before the 1947 season. The program abandoned its blue and gold colors in favor of red and white, and officially adopted the nickname 'Fighting Gamecocks.' This period of transition preceded a long climb through the ranks of collegiate athletics. After competing in various regional conferences throughout the mid-20th century, the program joined the NCAA in 1973, spending much of its history in Division II and later the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
The program's competitive peak in the lower divisions was marked by significant achievements, including ten Division II playoff appearances and a national championship victory in 1992, where they defeated Pittsburg State 17–13. Following decades of movement through the Southland, Ohio Valley, and ASUN conferences, the university accepted an invitation on November 5, 2021, to join Conference USA. This move signaled a definitive ascent to the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), a new chapter that officially commenced with the 2023 season.
