The resilient journey of an NHL goaltender from prospect to veteran star
In short: From his 2008 debut as a top draft pick to signing a massive 36 million dollar deal, Jacob Markström’s career has been a rollercoaster. The Swedish netminder has overcome knee surgery, AHL demotions, and concussions to become an NHL All-Star and a Vezina Trophy finalist.
Born on 31 January 1990, Jacob Markström entered the professional spotlight as a highly touted prospect. Selected 31st overall in the 2008 NHL entry draft by the Florida Panthers, the Swedish butterfly-style goaltender had already demonstrated elite efficiency, leading the Elitserien in save percentage (92.72%) and goals against average (2.01) during the 2009–10 season. His professional foundation was built in Sweden, where he signed with the Brynäs IF senior team in May 2008. Before reaching the NHL, he had already proven his mettle playing for the Brynäs IF junior squad.
His path to NHL stardom was rarely linear. After making his debut in January 2011, Markström faced significant hurdles, including being demoted to the AHL to adjust to North American shooting styles and recovering from knee surgery. His career has been marked by frequent movement between franchises, including stints with the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, and New Jersey Devils. The transition to North America proved difficult, as he initially struggled during his first season with the Rochester Americans. He eventually found his footing in Florida, earning his first NHL victory against the New York Islanders after making 18 saves.
Despite the volatility of trades and injuries—such as a concussion during the 2020–21 season—Markström reached new heights with the Calgary Flames. He achieved a personal-best 37–15–9 tally and a .922 save rate throughout 2021–22, topping the league with nine shutouts and securing a Vezina Trophy nomination. His international career is equally decorated, having secured a World Championship gold medal with Sweden in 2013 and earning individual honors at the 2009 World Junior Championships. Beyond his club success, he has been a vital part of the Swedish national program, even serving as a backup during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. His versatility was on display when he stepped in for an ill Henrik Lundqvist to help defeat Russia.
