From Toronto to the EuroLeague: the journey of basketball captain Cory Joseph
In short: Born into a basketball family, Cory Joseph has navigated the highest levels of professional play. From winning an NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs to captaining the Canadian national team, his career is a testament to versatility and endurance across multiple continents and leagues.
Cory Joseph's basketball pedigree is deeply rooted in family. Born in Toronto on August 20, 1991, he grew up in Pickering, Ontario, within a household of athletes. His father, David, was a student-athlete at Mount Royal College and a CCAA national champion, while his mother also coached and refereed. This foundation propelled Joseph through elite high school ranks, including a stint at Findlay Prep in Nevada, where he was a top national prospect.
His professional ascent included a standout collegiate career at the University of Texas and a selection in the 2011 NBA draft. Drafted 29th overall by the San Antonio Spurs, Joseph achieved the pinnacle of the sport on June 15, 2014, when the Spurs defeated the Miami Heat to secure an NBA championship. He later moved to his hometown team, the Toronto Raptors, in 2015, where he recorded a career-high 33 points against the Brooklyn Nets in January 2017.
Beyond the NBA, Joseph has become a cornerstone for Canadian basketball. He has served as the captain of the national team and played a crucial role in international competitions, such as the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, where he hit a buzzer-beating shot to secure a bronze medal against Mexico. His journey has since taken him through various leagues, including the NBA, the Greek Basketball League with Olympiacos, and a brief, complicated stint with AS Monaco in 2025.
Joseph's career is defined by his ability to adapt. Whether serving as a starting point guard for the Spurs during Tony Parker's injury in 2013 or competing in the EuroLeague, his presence has been a constant for Canada on the global stage. His ability to perform under pressure—from high school championships to international buzzer-beaters—highlights the resilience required to sustain a professional career spanning over a decade.
