The hockey legacy of a trade request and a natural hat trick
In short: Jake DeBrusk’s career is a study in professional resilience. From a high-profile trade request to a career-high scoring surge, he has navigated the volatile path of an NHL winger, balancing the weight of a famous hockey lineage with his own evolving identity on the ice.
Born in 1996 to former NHL forward and broadcaster Louie DeBrusk, Jake entered the professional ranks with significant pedigree. Drafted 14th overall by the Boston Bruins in 2015, he spent his early years establishing a reputation as a reliable offensive threat. His rookie season in 2017–18 was particularly notable for its immediate impact; he scored his first NHL goal and assist in the season opener against the Nashville Predators, an event witnessed by his father in the stands.
DeBrusk's career has been marked by distinct phases of production and personal navigation. After a successful 2018–19 season where he scored 27 goals, he faced a difficult 2020–21 campaign characterized by a sharp drop in production and a stint in COVID-19 protocol. This led to a complex 2021–22 season where he requested a trade from Boston in November. Despite the request, he rediscovered his scoring touch in February 2022, notably recording a natural hat trick against the Los Angeles Kings before signing a two-year, $8 million extension on the trade deadline.
Following a period of internal transition, DeBrusk rescinded his trade request in July 2022. He continued to provide high-level play for the Bruins, including a career-high 50-point season in 2022–23 despite injury time. Following a seven-year tenure in Boston, he joined the Vancouver Canucks on a $38.5 million, seven-year deal on 1 July 2024. Moving to Vancouver, he kept his scoring pace high, tallying 48 points and 28 goals during the 2024–25 campaign to reach new career highs.
DeBrusk's trajectory highlights the nuance of modern sports careers: the interplay between individual performance, contract negotiations, and the pressure of legacy. Whether navigating a 'revenge tour' against the Maple Leafs or adapting to a new franchise in Vancouver, his career serves as a blueprint for maintaining professional growth amidst shifting team dynamics.
