The NBA's first player of Vietnamese descent reaches the summit
In short: From a high school star in Arkansas to an NBA champion, Jaylin Williams has rewritten history. As a key piece of the Oklahoma City Thunder, his journey combines a unique heritage with a remarkable rise through the professional ranks.
Born on June 29, 2002, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Jaylin Williams—often called 'J-Will'—carries a lineage that connects the American South to Saigon. His mother, Linda, moved to the United States in 1975 following the Vietnam War. This heritage makes Williams a historic figure in professional basketball, as he is the first player of Vietnamese descent to be drafted into the NBA and to win an NBA championship.
Williams's ascent was marked by dominant performances at Northside High School and the University of Arkansas. During his senior year of high school, he earned Arkansas Gatorade Player of the NBA honors, averaging 18.7 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. His collegiate career saw him set a program single-season record with 364 rebounds and lead the NCAA Division I in charges drawn with 54. These defensive capabilities helped him secure first-team All-SEC honors as a sophomore.
With the 34th pick during the 2022 NBA draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder took Williams in round two. His professional trajectory includes significant milestones, such as recording multiple career triple-doubles against the Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers. On June 22, 2025, Williams reached the pinnacle of the sport, winning an NBA championship after the Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in a Game 7 victory. Following this success, he solidified his future with the franchise by signing a three-year, $24 million contract extension on his 23rd birthday.
