From Gateway High to the NFL: The professional journey of safety Jaquan Brisker
In short: Jaquan Brisker’s path to the NFL was anything but linear. After academic hurdles redirected his collegiate start to a junior college, he transformed into a standout at Penn State. His professional career, defined by high-impact play and recurring concussion challenges, highlights the physical toll of modern defensive football.
Born in 1999, Jaquan Brisker grew up in Pittsburgh and played at Gateway High School. His path to Division I football was initially blocked by low SAT scores, leading him to enroll at Lackawanna College. His performance there eventually earned him a spot at Pennsylvania State University, where he became a team captain and a second-team All-American by 2021.
The Chicago Bears selected Brisker 48th overall in the 2022 NFL draft. His rookie season established him as a key defensive presence, though it also marked the beginning of a recurring struggle with concussions. During a 2022 game against the Atlanta Falcons, he suffered a head injury but returned to play after missing only one snap, a decision that drew scrutiny as he was later diagnosed with a concussion that sidelined him for two games.
Brisker’s career has been characterized by both high-volume production and significant injury-related absences. In 2023, he recorded a career-high 17 tackles in a single game against the Detroit Lions. However, his 2024 season was cut short after five games due to a concussion sustained during a collision with Carolina Panthers tight end Tommy Tremble, leading to his absence for the final 12 games of that season. By 2026, Brisker transitioned to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year contract.
The physical nature of his play, often involving aggressive tackling, has been a central theme of his professional tenure. While he has demonstrated versatility and impact, his repeated experiences with concussion protocol have become a defining, albeit concerning, aspect of his professional trajectory. His career reflects the intense physical demands placed on NFL safeties and the ongoing challenges regarding player health and safety in the league.
