In short: From a Bundesliga debut in 2011 to a controversial demotion in the English Championship, Jannik Vestergaard’s career was defined by high-stakes shifts. Discover how a player with deep footballing roots navigated the peaks of the Champions League and the lows of relegation.

Born in Hvidovre to a Danish father and German mother, Jannik Vestergaard carried a significant footballing lineage. Both his uncle, Jan Schröers, and his German grandfather, Hannes Schröers, represented notable sides such as Bayer 05 Uerdingen and Fortuna Düsseldorf. This heritage preceded a professional journey that saw him move from Denmark to join the German Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim in 2010. His family's footballing connections even extended to his cousin, Mika Schröers, who was part of the Borussia Mönchengladbach youth setup in 2016.

Vestergaard’s career was marked by significant transfers and international milestones. After making his professional debut for Hoffenheim in April 2011, he moved to Werder Bremen in 2015 and later joined Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2016 for a reported €12 million plus bonuses. On the international stage, he earned 59 caps for Denmark, representing the senior side from his 2013 debut through to his retirement from international football in April 2026. During his international tenure, he participated in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and was part of the squad for the 2020 and 2024 UEFA European Championships. He also notably scored against the Czech Republic during the 2015 Under-21 European Championship.

His time in England brought both triumph and turbulence. After joining Southampton in 2018, he moved to Leicester City in 2021. While he helped the club achieve promotion to the Premier League during the 2023–24 season, his tenure was not without friction. Following critical comments regarding manager Brendan Rodgers, Vestergaard was demoted to the reserves in March 2023. His professional journey eventually concluded in late 2026, following his departure from Leicester and a subsequent retirement from the sport in October, citing a lack of motivation. Despite his period in the reserves, he eventually regained his place under Enzo Maresca, helping the team secure a Championship title. He even extended his stay at Leicester until 2027 before his eventual departure.
