In short: Originally titled Informer and Blood Money, the 2012 crime thriller Jannat 2 faced early identity struggles. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film became a massive commercial success, eventually earning 700 million in its theatrical run and proving the power of a strong franchise name.

Released on 4 May 2012, Jannat 2 is a Hindi-language crime thriller directed by Kunal Deshmukh. It serves as a spiritual sequel to the 2008 film Jannat. Before settling on the final title, the production team considered Informer and Blood Money, but these options failed to generate positive feedback, leading Deshmukh to pivot toward the established Jannat brand.

The narrative follows Sonu Dilli, a street-smart arms dealer in Delhi with a gift for gab. His life takes a dangerous turn when he becomes a police informant for Assistant Commissioner of Police Pratap Raghuvanshi to navigate the illegal arms rackets. The plot thickens when Sonu discovers his wife Jhanvi's father, Mangal Singh Tomar, is the very leader of the arms business he is investigating.

While critics were divided—with some offering 4/5 stars for its music and action, while others gave it as low as 1/5 star for a predictable plot—the film was a significant box office triumph. It opened with ₹85.0 million nett on its first day and eventually reached a total theatrical collection of 700 million. The film also marked the acting debut of Esha Gupta, who earned a Filmfare Best Female Debut nomination.

The production was not without legal friction; in 2012, writer Kapil Chopra filed a plagiarism lawsuit against the Bhatts, prompting the Bombay High Court to order a deposit of Rs 1 million.
