The striker who switched nations to play in a World Cup
In short: From being released by Hearts as a youth to scoring on the world stage, Jason Cummings' career is a journey of resilience. After representing Scotland at the senior level, the striker made a high-stakes decision to switch his international allegiance to Australia, eventually debuting for the Socceroos at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Jason Cummings' career is defined by prolific scoring and unexpected transitions. He first rose to prominence at Hibernian, where he became the club's top scorer for three consecutive seasons, scoring over 20 goals each year. This feat, achieved between 2014 and 2017, had not been accomplished by a Hibs player in over 50 years, since Joe Baker between 1957 and 1961.
His journey has been marked by significant shifts in both club and national identity. After making his full senior debut for Scotland in November 2017, Cummings eventually opted to represent Australia, a move facilitated by his dual citizenship and his mother's Australian roots in Perth. He made his debut for the Socceroos in September 2022, later appearing in Australia's opening match against France during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond the international stage, Cummings has found success across multiple leagues. He won the A-League with the Central Coast Mariners in 2022–23, earning the Joe Marston Medal after scoring a hat-trick in the Grand Final. More recently, he has moved to the Indian Super League with Mohun Bagan, where he contributed to winning the League Shield in the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons, and lifting the ISL trophy in April 2025.
Despite these successes, his path has not been without controversy. In September 2018, while on loan at Peterborough United, he was filmed destroying his flat, an incident described by club chairman Darragh MacAnthony as "daft."
