In short: Born in Salem, Ohio, in 1979, Jason Candle rose from a collegiate wide receiver to become the winningest head football coach in the history of the University of Toledo. His journey spans over two decades of coaching, culminating in a major career transition to the University of Connecticut in late 2025.

Jason Candle’s football foundation was built at the Division III level. As a player, he competed at Geneva College from 1998 to 1999 before transferring to Mount Union, where he played from 2000 to 2001. During his time at Mount Union, he was part of two championship-winning teams. After graduating in 2003, Candle immediately transitioned into coaching, serving as the wide receivers coach at his alma mater for three years before being elevated to offensive coordinator in 2007, a role he assumed after Matt Campbell departed for Bowling Green.

In 2009, Candle moved to the University of Toledo, where he would spend the next sixteen years. Initially hired as a position coach for slot receivers and tight ends, he reunited with Campbell, who was then the run game coordinator. As Campbell climbed the coaching ranks to head coach, Candle followed, eventually becoming the offensive coordinator and associate head coach. Following Campbell’s departure for Iowa State, Toledo appointed Candle as head coach in December 2015. He made an immediate impact, winning his debut in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Candle’s tenure at Toledo was defined by sustained success and record-breaking achievements. He secured multiple MAC championships and, in 2023, was named the MAC Coach of the Year after leading the team to an 11-win season. By 2025, Candle had surpassed Gary Pinkel to become the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories, reaching 74 wins. His consistent performance at Toledo drew outside interest, and in December 2025, it was confirmed that he had accepted a six-year deal to lead the University of Connecticut football program, taking over for Jim L. Mora.

The transition to Connecticut marks a significant new chapter for Candle. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated an ability to adapt, moving from the lower tiers of college football to becoming a prominent figure in the MAC. His departure from Toledo leaves behind a legacy of stability and high-level production, setting a high bar for his successor at the university.
