How a left-footed winger rose from Macedonia to the AFC Champions League Elite
In short: From a professional debut in Skopje to scoring decisive goals in South Korea, Jasir Asani’s journey is a testament to persistence. His rise from the Macedonian leagues to the international stage was fueled by a manager's late-night scouting of highlights from Hungary and South Korea.
After being born in Skopje to Albanian parents from Batinci, Jasir Asani started his professional football journey at the Macedonian side Vardar. He made his debut on 25 August 2013, appearing in the final minutes of a 2–0 defeat to Turnovo. His early years saw rapid development, including his first professional goal on 1 March 2014 and a hat-trick shortly after against Napredok on 30 March 2014.
Asani's career has been marked by significant transitions across Europe and Asia. After stints in Albania with Partizani and Hungary with Kisvárda, he moved to the South Korean K League 1 side Gwangju FC on 28 December 2022. His impact in Korea was immediate; he scored a winning goal on his debut against Suwon Samsung Bluewings on 23 February 2023 and recorded a second career hat-trick against Incheon United on 18 March.
His most recent exploits have occurred in the AFC Champions League Elite. In September 2024, he became the first player to score a hat-trick in the inaugural 2024–25 edition of the tournament during a 7–3 victory over Yokohama F. Marinos. He continued this form by scoring a decisive penalty and an extra-time winner in March 2025 to help Gwangju FC secure a 3–2 aggregate victory over Vissel Kobe, advancing them to the quarter-finals.
On the international stage, Asani's path was shaped by manager Sylvinho, who sought a left-footed right winger for a 4–3–3 formation. After watching Asani's highlights from Hungary and South Korea in the early morning, Sylvinho called him up for a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match against Poland on 27 March 2023. Asani's contributions helped Albania qualify for the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany.
