The high cost of a first-round draft pick
In short: In 2005, the Washington Redskins traded away multiple draft picks just to secure Jason Campbell. It was a massive gamble on a quarterback who would navigate a career defined by injuries, coaching changes, and the heavy burden of being a franchise cornerstone.
Jason Campbell entered the NFL with immense expectations. Selected 25th overall in the 2005 draft, the Washington Redskins were so determined to acquire him that General Manager Vinny Cerrato traded up, surrendering a third-round pick and first and fourth-round picks in 2006. This investment followed a stellar collegiate career at Auburn, where Campbell led the Tigers to an undefeated 2004 season, earning SEC Player of the Year honors.
His professional journey, however, was marked by volatility. While he showed early promise—earning NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors in 2007 after a victory over the Carolina Panthers—his tenure in Washington was plagued by physical setbacks. A knee bruise in 2007 was followed by a dislocated patellar ligament in December of that year, sidelining him for the remainder of the season. The team's stability also wavered under head coach Jim Zorn, leading to a period of uncertainty regarding Campbell's future as the starter.
Throughout his professional tenure, Campbell transitioned between several teams, including the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, and Oakland Raiders. In Oakland, he experienced both extremes: a 59-14 rout of the Denver Broncos that set a franchise scoring record, and struggles that saw him demoted to a backup role. Despite the frequent roster changes and the pressure of replacing established veterans like Jay Cutler or Andy Dalton, Campbell remained a resilient figure in the league, eventually transitioning into an analyst role for the Auburn Sports Network.
