From viral TikTok star to NBA first-round draft pick
In short: Before he was a professional basketball player, Jared McCain was a digital sensation. Known for viral college vlogs and dance challenges, the Duke standout transitioned from a five-star recruit to a high-stakes NBA talent, navigating both sudden fame and significant physical setbacks.
Jared McCain's ascent to the NBA was marked by high-profile recruitment and a significant social media presence. A consensus five-star recruit in the class of 2023, McCain gained attention not just for his performance at Centennial High School in California, but also through his appearances in the YouTube docuseries 'Believe'. His ability to blend athletic excellence with digital influence, including a viral video to Aimee Carty's '2 Days into College' in early 2024, helped establish him as a prominent figure during his time with the Duke Blue Devils.
His collegiate career at Duke was defined by explosive scoring. On February 17, 2024, he scored 35 points against Florida State, a performance that tied the Duke freshman record previously held by Zion Williamson. The 76ers chose him 16th overall during the 2024 NBA draft due to his impressive scoring ability. During his initial NBA months, he became the first 76ers player to earn Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors since Ben Simmons in March 2018, averaging 16.0 points per game through his first 18 appearances.
However, his professional trajectory has been complicated by injuries. After a strong start in late 2024, a meniscus tear in his left knee was announced in December, eventually sidelining him for the remainder of that season. Subsequent challenges included surgery for a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb in late 2025. Following a trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder in February 2026, McCain has continued to demonstrate his potential, including a playoff career-high of 24 points during the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
