From transfer portal battles to the NBA: the rise of Jaylon Tyson
In short: After navigating complex eligibility waivers and controversial coaching departures, Jaylon Tyson has transitioned from a high school standout in Texas to a professional in the NBA. His journey through the collegiate transfer portal highlights the intense, often turbulent path modern athletes must navigate to reach the highest level of basketball.
Jaylon Tyson's ascent to the NBA was marked by significant collegiate movement. After a brief stint at the University of Texas during the 2021–22 season, where he averaged 1.8 points per game, he entered the transfer portal. He eventually committed to Texas Tech, where he became a key contributor, starting 31 games in the 2022–23 season and averaging 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
His tenure at Texas Tech was shadowed by controversy involving head coach Mark Adams. Tyson entered the transfer portal for a second time following racially insensitive comments made by Adams, who later resigned. This transition led Tyson to the California Golden Bears. His path was further complicated in October 2023 when the NCAA initially denied his eligibility waiver, despite allegations of discrimination. However, he was ultimately granted eligibility on November 9.
Tyson entered the professional ranks after being chosen 20th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2024 NBA draft. He officially signed with the team on July 3, 2024. His rookie season included assignments to the Cleveland Charge, where he averaged 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds. He has since become a more prominent figure for the Cavaliers, notably recording a career-high 39 points on January 16, 2026, in a victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Interestingly, Tyson has been identified by statistical modeling as the most average player in the NBA, a metric that highlights his consistent presence on the court.
