A childhood accident nearly ended his career before Jean-Clair Todibo ever turned professional.
In short: Born in French Guiana and raised near Paris, Jean-Clair Todibo faced a life-altering challenge at age nine when a motor vehicle accident left his ability to walk in doubt. He defied the odds, recovering fully to pursue a professional football career that has spanned Europe’s most prestigious leagues and clubs.
Todibo’s path to professional football began at Les Lilas, where he signed at age six. After his recovery from the childhood accident, he progressed through the ranks before joining Toulouse in 2016. His professional debut in Ligue 1 arrived in August 2018, and by January 2019, he had secured a high-profile move to Barcelona. As the 22nd Frenchman to join the Spanish giants, he was assigned the number 6 shirt, though his time there was limited to four appearances.
The subsequent years saw Todibo embark on a series of loans across Europe, including stints at Schalke 04, where he was voted Player of the Month by fans in March 2020, and Benfica. In 2021, he found stability at Nice, which made his transfer permanent for €8.5 million plus variables. His tenure in France was marked by both skill and volatility; in September 2022, he set a Ligue 1 record by receiving a red card just nine seconds into a match against Angers.
His career trajectory eventually led to the Premier League, where he joined West Ham United on an initial loan in August 2024. The deal included a €40 million obligation to buy, which was triggered following the 2024–25 season. His time in England has seen further disciplinary challenges, including a straight red card for violent conduct against Chelsea in January 2026. By September 2026, he returned to Ligue 1 on loan to Lens.
Beyond club football, Todibo has represented France at the international level. After debuting for the under-20 squad in 2018, he earned his first senior call-up in March 2023. He made his senior debut against Germany in September 2023 and participated in France’s historic 14–0 victory over Gibraltar in November of that same year, cementing his place in the national setup.
