Can a comedy-drama challenge the weight of patriarchal tradition?
In short: In the fictional village of Pravingadh, a man's devotion to gender equality puts him at odds with his own family. Jayeshbhai Jordaar explores the high stakes of gender preference through a story of escape, family secrets, and the fight for a daughter's right to exist.
Directed by Divyang Thakkar and starring Ranveer Singh, the 2022 film Jayeshbhai Jordaar follows Jayesh Patel, a man living in a sexist village governed by his father, Pruthvishbhai. The narrative centers on the tension between traditional expectations of male heirs and the protagonist's belief in equal rights for women. This tension is heightened by a harrowing backstory: to maintain a family lineage, Jayesh's wife, Mudra, was forced to undergo six abortions over nine years because the children were female. The film was produced by Maneesh Sharma under the Yash Raj Films banner. This story is set against a backdrop of intense social pressure, where the protagonist's family is led by the village sarpanch.
The plot shifts into a high-stakes escape when Jayesh learns his second child is also a girl. To protect his family, he plans to flee to Laadopur, a fictional Haryana village known for its all-male population that promises to treat women with respect. The film uses this journey to explore the complexities of gender-based discrimination and the social pressures placed on women to produce male heirs. This desperate flight is triggered when Jayesh discovers his upcoming child is another girl. He seeks refuge in a place where men have promised to treat women like queens.
Upon its theatrical release on 13 May 2022, the film received mixed critical reviews. While some critics praised Ranveer Singh's performance as a departure from his typical macho roles, others noted the film's blend of humor and serious social messaging. Although critics were divided, the movie earned roughly ₹26.31 crore globally, comprising ₹18.56 crore domestically and ₹7.75 crore from international markets. The production was delayed several times due to the global pandemic. Despite mixed reactions, the film's soundtrack was composed by the duo Vishal–Shekhar.
