From Porto's academy to Serie A: the rise of João Mário
In short: Born in São João da Madeira, this Portuguese defender has navigated a rapid ascent through elite European football. After developing at Porto, he has transitioned from a promising junior to a versatile right-back, eventually securing a major move to Juventus and making his mark on the international stage.
João Mário Neto Lopes, born on 3 January 2000, began his footballing journey at his hometown club, Sanjoanense. His professional trajectory accelerated when he joined the ranks of Porto at just nine years old. By the age of 18, he was making his professional debut for Porto's reserve team in a LigaPro match against Arouca on 7 October 2018.
A significant turning point in his career was his tactical reconversion. Under manager Sérgio Conceição, Mário was transitioned into a right-back role, though he has also been deployed as a winger. While playing for Porto, he recorded five goals across 181 matches, securing various trophies such as four Taça de Portugal wins and two Primeira Liga titles.
His international career progressed from under-21 levels, where he earned his first cap on 4 September 2020, to the senior Portugal national team. His senior debut arrived in November 2023, when he replaced Diogo Dalot in the squad for UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying matches. He made his first appearance as a substitute against Liechtenstein, followed by his first start on 19 November 2023 against Iceland.
In the summer of 2025, Mário moved to the Italian Serie A, signing a five-year contract with Juventus for a transfer fee of €12 million. Following a loan to Bologna, where he scored his first Italian goal in a UEFA Europa League play-off against Brann, he moved to Fiorentina on loan for the 2026–27 season.
