How a childhood battle with epilepsy shaped a Major League Baseball career
In short: Before becoming a high-profile outfielder, Jordon Scott Adell faced a different kind of competition. Growing up with epilepsy meant recurring seizures, a condition that ultimately redirected his athletic path away from football and toward the baseball diamond, where he would eventually reach the highest level of professional play.
Born on April 8, 1999, Adell's journey to the Major Leagues was marked by significant physical and technical evolution. His early years were defined by the necessity of choosing a sport compatible with his health, leading him to commit to the University of Louisville after his freshman year in 2014. By his junior year in 2016, he demonstrated a rare versatility, performing as both a hitter with a .449 average and a pitcher with a 1.55 earned run average. During his time at Ballard High School, he was considered a top prospect for the professional draft. His collegiate performance was highlighted by 11 home runs and 44 RBIs during his junior year.
After being selected tenth overall in the 2017 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Angels, Adell's ascent through the minor leagues was rapid. He faced several developmental hurdles, including a three-month slump during the 2024 season. To combat a high strikeout rate, he made a decisive technical adjustment by removing his leg kick, a change that successfully reduced his strikeout rate from 29.1 percent to 25.2 percent. His professional journey began in the Arizona League before he moved up to the Orem Owlz. He also represented the Angels in the 2018 All-Star Futures Game.
Adell has become known for both power and defensive highlights. In 2023, he hit a 514-foot home run, the longest recorded since Statcast began tracking in 2015. On 4 April 2026, he made history as the initial MLB athlete to deny three home runs during a single match. Following a breakout 2025 season where he hit 37 home runs and was voted team MVP, he was traded to the Cleveland Guardians in August 2026. In 2023, he set an Angels franchise record by hitting home runs in six consecutive games during April. His career has seen him transition from the Los Angeles Angels to the Cleveland Guardians.
