The defender who set a record for Danish football transfers
In short: From a one-week trial in the Netherlands to becoming a record-breaking star in France, Joachim Andersen’s ascent has been anything but linear. His journey through Europe's top leagues has transformed him into a versatile defensive powerhouse, capable of playing anywhere across the backline or even in midfield.
Born on 31 May 1996, Andersen's professional path began in earnest when he accepted a one-week trial with FC Twente in April 2013. By August of that year, he had signed a youth contract for a fee estimated at 5 million Danish kroner (€650,000). This early move to the Netherlands set the stage for a career defined by rapid progression and high-value transfers. Before this move, he had developed through the Copenhagen academy. He also spent time at Midtjylland's talent academy in Ikast.
His technical proficiency as a ball-playing defender was highlighted during his time in Italy's Serie A. During the 2018–19 season, while playing for Sampdoria, he was surpassed in long-pass accuracy by only one player: Inter Milan's Marcelo Brozović. This composure in possession eventually led to a landmark move to Olympique Lyonnais in July 2019, where his €30 million transfer fee set a new record for a Danish player and became the highest ever for the French club. This move to France was a significant step up from his time in Italy. He had previously played for Sampdoria after choosing Serie A to further his development.
Andersen has since become a fixture for the Denmark national team, earning his first senior cap in October 2019 against Luxembourg. He has represented his country on the world's biggest stages, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2024. His versatility allows him to operate as a centre-back on either side or as a defensive midfielder, a trait that has made him a vital asset in the Premier League for clubs like Crystal Palace and Fulham. His international experience also includes competing in UEFA Euro 2020. He has proven his worth in the Premier League through stints with Crystal Palace and Fulham.
