How a French basketball star became the first foreign captain of a Serbian giant
In short: Born on September 30, 1991, Joffrey Lauvergne carved a unique path through international basketball. After rising through French youth ranks, he found a second home in Belgrade, where he shattered tradition by becoming the first foreign captain in the history of the storied Serbian club, Partizan Belgrade.
Lauvergne’s career is defined by his adaptability across elite European and American leagues. After early success in France with Élan Chalon, where he secured a league title and two French Cups by 2012, he moved to Partizan Belgrade in late 2012. Under the guidance of head coach Duško Vujošević, Lauvergne flourished, developing into a dominant rebounder. His impact was so significant that he was named team captain, a historic appointment for the Serbian powerhouse that underscored his deep integration into the club's culture.
His performance in Belgrade caught the attention of the NBA, leading to his selection by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2013 draft, with his rights subsequently traded to the Denver Nuggets. Lauvergne eventually made his NBA debut in February 2015. Over his time in the United States, he played for the Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, and San Antonio Spurs, recording a career-high 26 points against Denver in 2018. Despite the demands of the NBA, he maintained a strong connection to European basketball, later competing for Fenerbahçe, Žalgiris Kaunas, and ASVEL.
Beyond his club career, Lauvergne has been a vital contributor to the French national team. He was part of the squad that captured gold at EuroBasket 2013 and secured a bronze medal at the 2014 World Cup. His journey reflects the modern era of professional basketball, where players frequently transition between continents, adapting to different tactical systems while maintaining high levels of production. Whether navigating a false positive COVID-19 test in 2020 or returning to Partizan in 2026, Lauvergne has remained a consistent presence in the global game.
