From wooden spoons to a golden era: the rise of the Parramatta Eels
In short: After decades of struggling with amateur rosters and finishing last, the Parramatta Eels transformed into a rugby league powerhouse. Their journey from the bottom of the ladder to a dominant dynasty in the early 1980s remains one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Australian sporting history.
The club's early years were defined by hardship. Between 1952 and 1961, Parramatta struggled significantly, finishing last eight times and securing only 35 wins out of 180 matches. Unlike their competitors who fielded international stars, the Eels relied largely on amateur and park footballers, lacking the resources to compete at the highest level.
A dramatic shift occurred in the late 1970s and early 1980s. After reaching their first grand final in 1976—a match lost narrowly due to a late dropped pass by winger Neville Glover—the club entered a golden era. Under coach Jack Gibson, the team secured four premierships between 1981 and 1986. This period included three consecutive titles from 1981 to 1983, with victories over the Newtown Jets and the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
The club's history is marked by both extreme highs and sudden falls. Following their 1980s success, they failed to reach the finals for a decade. However, they have experienced dramatic surges, such as in 2009 when, despite being $151 outsiders, they mounted an unexpected run to the grand final fueled by Jarryd Hayne's extraordinary form. Such momentum once led NSW Premier Nathan Rees to pledge that winning a premiership would result in new Sydney trains being named after players like Hayne.
Today, the Eels compete in the National Rugby League (NRL) as a major professional club, playing at Western Sydney Stadium on the site of their former home, Parramatta Stadium.
