From a Canadian bedroom to global stages with Ed Sheeran
In short: Before she became a staple of Bollywood soundtracks and international remixes, Jonita Gandhi was a teenager making viral YouTube covers from her room. Her journey from a Punjabi-Canadian upbringing to performing at the Narendra Modi Stadium illustrates the modern path of cultural fusion in music.
Born in 1989 to a Punjabi family from Delhi, Jonita Gandhi emigrated to Canada as an infant. Raised in Brampton and later Mississauga, she grew up in a household where music was a constant presence; both her father and brother were part-time musicians who performed at community events. Despite this environment, her professional start was humble. At age 16, she failed to progress past the audition rounds of Canadian Idol, leading her to begin producing independent covers on YouTube from her bedroom.
Her transition from internet creator to industry professional was catalyzed by viral success and formal training in both Western and Hindustani classical singing. After graduating from the Ivey Business School with degrees in health science and business in 2012, she secured a pivotal opportunity to tour internationally alongside Sonu Nigam. This opened the door to playback singing for major Bollywood films like Highway and Chennai Express, working with renowned composers such as A. R. Rahman, Pritam, and Vishal–Shekhar.
Gandhi's career exemplifies the globalization of Indian music. She has recorded in a wide array of languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, and Bengali. Her reach expanded further with high-profile appearances, such as performing at the 2016 Jubilee Games in Dubai and appearing on MTV Unplugged. Most recently, her international profile peaked in 2025 when she was featured on a remix of Ed Sheeran's 'Heaven,' while simultaneously preparing for her first film debut in 2026.
Her trajectory highlights a shift in how artists build credibility: moving from local community music to digital platforms, then into the traditional studio system, and finally back out to global independent releases. This multi-layered career path allows her to bridge the gap between classical Indian roots and contemporary pop.
