From North Philadelphia streets to NFL stardom: the resilient rise of Jonnu Smith
In short: After losing a close friend to street violence and moving to Florida for safety, Jonnu Smith transformed from an overlooked recruit into an NFL standout. His journey through the draft, major trades, and career-high seasons is a masterclass in overcoming adversity through sheer athletic performance.
Jonnu Smith’s path to professional football was shaped by significant early hardships. Raised in North Philadelphia, Smith faced a period of instability after the arrest of his brother and the death of a close friend, Willie “Quasim” Jefferson, in October 2016. To ensure his safety, Smith moved to Ocala, Florida, to live with relatives. Despite being far from a highly touted recruit, his performance at West Port High School earned him a scholarship to Florida International University.
His professional ascent began in the 2017 NFL Draft, where he was selected in the third round, 100th overall, by the Tennessee Titans. While draft experts initially projected him as a fourth or fifth-round pick, Smith’s impressive performance at the NFL Scouting Combine—placing second in the vertical jump and short shuttle—helped him exceed expectations. He signed a four-year, $3.1 million contract with the Titans in May 2017, following a period of intense competition for a roster spot.
Smith's career has been defined by high-stakes transitions and statistical breakthroughs. After stints with the New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, and Miami Dolphins, he reached new heights in 2024, setting career highs with 88 receptions and 884 receiving yards. His career has also been marked by notable trades, including a 2025 move to the Pittsburgh Steelers that reunited him with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Beyond the field, Smith remains deeply connected to his roots, even naming his son Jaiyen Quasim in memory of his late friend.
