From tuba player to Super Bowl champion: the resilient career of Jordan Devey
In short: Before he was an NFL guard, Jordan Devey was a high school musician and baseball player. Despite overcoming Osgood–Schlatter disease and a hiatus for religious service, he rose from an undrafted free agent to a Super Bowl winner, playing eight seasons in the league.
Jordan Devey’s journey to the NFL was anything but linear. His sporting journey was halted by Osgood–Schlatter disease, following his time playing baseball and the tuba in the American Fork High School band. This condition prevented him from playing football during his high school years, though he eventually recovered to play for Snow College and the University of Memphis. During his time at Memphis, he earned second-team All-C-USA honors in 2012 and received the DeAngelo Williams Most Valuable Player Award. For a duration of two years, he undertook a mission in Costa Rica on behalf of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This period followed his time playing baseball and tuba in high school.
Devey entered the professional ranks as an undrafted free agent. After an initial stint with the Baltimore Ravens in early 2013, he joined the New England Patriots. He became a member of the championship squad that won Super Bowl XLIX after a 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. During that 2014 season, he was promoted to the active roster and started six games at the guard position.
During an eight-season career, he represented various clubs such as the Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, and San Francisco 49ers. His tenure was marked by both professional highs and physical setbacks, including a torn pectoral muscle in 2018 and various stints on injured reserve. Following his football career, Devey passed away on July 21, 2026, at the age of 38. His professional journey included time with the San Francisco 49ers and the Las Vegas Raiders. He also spent time on the Buffalo Bills' practice squad.
