The dual-threat quarterback who redefined LSU's ground game
In short: Jordan Jefferson was a rare force at LSU, combining elite rushing and passing skills. While his statistics were often split between roles, his ability to move the ball on the ground forced defenses into impossible choices, ultimately leading the Tigers to a national championship appearance.
During his tenure with the LSU Tigers from 2008 to 2011, Jefferson became a central figure in the program's offensive identity. A multi-talented playmaker, he set the collegiate mark for a quarterback's rushing total at 1,018 yards. Defenses had to contend with his running, which aided the potent ground game at LSU.
However, his statistical profile was often shaped by his shared responsibilities. Because LSU leaned heavily on the ground game and Jefferson frequently shared quarterback duties with Jarrett Lee, his passing yardage was frequently lower than expected. In 11 games—roughly 34% of his starts—he threw for less than 100 yards. Despite this, LSU only lost three of those specific games.
Jefferson's impact was most visible during high-stakes stretches. In 2011, he led the Tigers to a 42–10 victory over Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and reached the BCS National Championship Game. He finished his career with 4,733 passing yards and 34 touchdowns, ranking him eighth in school history for career passing yards and tying for seventh in passing touchdowns.
His professional journey was more turbulent. After going undrafted in 2012, he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was waived just four days later. He later played for the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL and the Pittsburgh Power in the Arena Football League, before transitioning into coaching as a graduate assistant at Colorado State in 2019.
