From Spanish lower leagues to Arsenal's Champions League spotlight
In short: Manuel Almunia's career was defined by sudden shifts in fortune. After years in the Spanish second tier, he moved to Arsenal to serve as a backup, only to find himself thrust into the most intense matches in European football due to unexpected circumstances.
Born in Pamplona, Navarre, in 1977, Almunia's journey to the Premier League was far from linear. He spent his formative professional years in the Spanish lower leagues, including a four-season stint in the Segunda División B with CA Osasuna's reserves. His breakthrough in Spain came during the 2001–02 campaign while on loan at SD Eibar, where he earned the Ricardo Zamora Trophy for his performance in the Segunda División.
His move to Arsenal in July 2004 initially positioned him as the understudy to Jens Lehmann. However, fate frequently placed him in high-stakes scenarios. In the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League final against FC Barcelona, Almunia was forced into the game in the 20th minute after Lehmann received a red card. Despite the pressure, he conceded only two goals in the 2–1 loss.
The rivalry between Almunia and Lehmann created significant tension within the squad. While Lehmann publicly questioned Almunia's ability to win matches, Almunia eventually secured the number one shirt for the 2008–09 season. His career was marked by both brilliance, such as saving penalties from Robbie Keane and Obafemi Martins, and inconsistency that led to speculation about his future.
Almunia's professional playing career ended unexpectedly on 28 August 2014. Following a medical with the Italian side Cagliari Calcio, a rare heart condition was discovered, leading doctors to advise his retirement. He later transitioned into coaching, joining Al Jazira Club as a goalkeeping coach in 2016.
