From Snoop Dogg’s protégé to NFL record breaker
In short: Long before he was a Super Bowl champion, JuJu Smith-Schuster was a youth football player nicknamed 'Sportscenter' by Snoop Dogg. Today, the wide receiver holds records that even legends like Randy Moss haven't touched, proving that early hype can indeed manifest as professional greatness.
The journey of John Sherman Smith-Schuster began in the Snoop Youth Football League, where the rapper Snoop Dogg famously predicted his future stardom. By calling the young player 'Sportscenter,' Snoop anticipated the highlights that would eventually define Smith-Schuster's career. This early trajectory led him to Long Beach Polytechnic High School, a legendary program known for producing an unprecedented number of NFL players, where he emerged as a five-star recruit.
After a standout collegiate career with the USC Trojans—including a 2015 season where he recorded 1,454 receiving yards—Smith-Schuster entered the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round, he immediately made history. He became the youngest player in the league to score a touchdown since 1964 and later became the first player ever to record two offensive touchdowns of at least 97 yards.
His career has been marked by both immense skill and polarizing personality. Known as 'TikTok Boy' for his social media presence, he faced scrutiny for dancing on opponents' logos and participating in the viral milk crate challenge. However, his on-field achievements remain undeniable. He surpassed Randy Moss as the youngest wide receiver to reach 2,500 career receiving yards at just 22 years and 297 days old. His professional journey has taken him from the Steelers to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he secured a victory in Super Bowl LVII, and later to the New England Patriots.
