From backup quarterback to ACC Coach of the Year
In short: Before leading major programs like Virginia Tech and Memphis, Justin Fuente navigated the volatile transitions of college football. His journey from a redshirted player at Oklahoma to a decorated head coach reveals the grit required to master the game's highest levels.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Justin Fuente’s football trajectory began with significant promise at Union High School. In 1994, his senior season, he dominated the state's passing charts, recording 2,934 yards and 32 touchdowns. This performance earned him 'Player of the Year' honors from the Tulsa World and 'All-State Offensive Player of the Year' from The Oklahoman. These accolades led him to sign with the University of Oklahoma in February 1995.
His time as a player at Oklahoma and later at Murray State University was marked by both struggle and record-breaking success. After redshirting in 1995 and navigating a period of competition for the starting role at Oklahoma, Fuente transferred to Murray State. There, he became a standout, earning the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year title following the 1999 season. He set several single-season records, including 3,497 passing yards and 27 touchdowns.
Transitioning to coaching, Fuente built a reputation for developing elite talent, including three-time Pro Bowler Andy Dalton. As head coach at Memphis from 2012 to 2015, he led the Tigers to an American Athletic Conference championship in 2014 and their first 10-win season since 1938. He later took the helm at Virginia Tech in 2015, earning the 2016 ACC Coach of the Year award after leading the Hokies to the ACC Championship game.
Despite his professional achievements, Fuente’s later career reflects the shifting landscape of the sport. Following his departure from Virginia Tech in 2021, he expressed dissatisfaction with the increasingly transactional nature of player-coach relationships in modern college football. As of 2025, he has transitioned into roles as a radio color commentator for TCU and a senior advisor to the College Football Playoff.
