How a TikTok creator rose from Rhode Island to the Billboard Hot 100
In short: For Jacob Dodge Lawson, the COVID-19 lockdowns provided a surprising launchpad. What began as simple skits on TikTok evolved into a rapid ascent through the music charts, transforming a piano-playing student into a global sensation with hits like 'Golden Hour'.
Born on March 3, 2001, in Providence, Rhode Island, Jacob Dodge Lawson—known professionally as Jvke—was raised in a musical household. The son of a church pastor and an elementary music teacher, Lawson began piano lessons at a young age and spent his youth singing and writing songs for his church. This foundational training eventually led him to the Community College of Rhode Island, though he would ultimately drop out to pursue music as a full-time career.
His breakthrough was catalyzed by the digital landscape of 2020. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Lawson began creating TikTok videos. His first single, 'Upside Down', gained significant traction, eventually catching the attention of artist Charlie Puth, who approached him for a remix. This momentum continued into 2021 with the release of 'Dandelion', a collaboration with Galantis announced via Instagram.
The true turning point arrived on July 15, 2022, with the release of 'Golden Hour'. Co-written and produced with his brother, Zac Lawson, the track became a massive commercial success. It debuted at number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually climbed to number 10, while also reaching number 19 on the UK Singles Chart. This success brought Lawson worldwide attention, including performances on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and recognition as the MTV Push Artist for October 2022.
Lawson's career has since expanded into diverse collaborations, including work with Martin Garrix for the mobile game Marvel Snap in late 2022, and a 2023 appearance on the Fast X soundtrack. His ability to leverage social media trends remains a constant, evidenced by his 2025 single 'Butterflies' and the viral resurgence of his song 'Her' through TikTok challenges.
