The coach who mastered two different championship dynasties
In short: In the competitive world of college football, winning a national title is rare. Winning two at different institutions is nearly unheard of. Kurt Charles Keeler achieved this feat by revolutionizing offensive strategies and building championship cultures at both the University of Delaware and Sam Houston State University.
Kurt Charles Keeler, born July 26, 1959, has carved out a unique legacy in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). He stands as the all-time winningest coach in FCS playoff history. His ability to adapt was most evident when he took over the University of Delaware in 2002. He replaced the program's historic Winged-T formation with a modern no-huddle, spread offense, leading the team to a Division I-AA national championship in 2003 with a 15–1 record.
Keeler's success was not limited to Delaware. After a period working as a content producer for NFL Films and a commentator for ESPN, he took the helm at Sam Houston State University in 2014. He led the Bearkats to their first NCAA football championship in program history in 2020, securing a 23–21 victory over South Dakota State. This achievement made him the only coach in FCS history to win national championships at two different schools.
His coaching career is marked by significant milestones and high-profile recognition. A 2019 ESPN Blue Ribbon Panel ranked him among the 150 finest college football coaches in history. His tenure at Sam Houston included three Southland Conference championships and a WAC championship. Following the 2024 regular season, Keeler transitioned to a new role as the head coach at Temple University, continuing a career that began as a linebacker for the University of Delaware's 1979 Division II championship squad.
