How a bankrupt football club resurrected a legendary identity
In short: When Beerschot AC collapsed under financial ruin in 2013, many thought the era of the purple and white was over. Yet, through a strategic merger and a bold rebranding, a smaller club managed to absorb a fallen giant's soul and rise back through the divisions.
The story of K Beerschot VA is one of survival and identity reclamation. The original Beerschot AC faced a sudden end on 21 May 2013, when financial struggles led to bankruptcy and the club's dissolution. However, the spirit of the club found a new vessel in KFCO Wilrijk. This club, which had been formed from a 1993 merger between KFC Wilrijk and Olympia Wilrijk 72, decided to integrate the identity of the defunct Beerschot AC, adopting its iconic purple and white colours.
The transition was not without bureaucratic hurdles. Because the club changed its name to incorporate Beerschot, the Belgian football association ruled it could no longer use the 'royal' title. It took until June 2017 for the club to successfully apply to regain its royal status. Despite these administrative shifts, the club's popularity exploded. During its time in the provincial division, attendance figures shattered local records, including a massive crowd of nearly 12,000 fans for a title-deciding match against KFC Katelijne-Waver in March 2014.
Since that rebirth, the club has navigated the complex tiers of Belgian football. After climbing through the amateur leagues and securing promotion to the top flight in the 2019-2020 season, the club has experienced the volatility of professional play, including relegation in 2022 and a subsequent return to the Belgian Pro League for the 2024-25 campaign. Today, the club continues to play at the Olympic Stadium, famously known as 't Kiel', maintaining a following so large that it often necessitates larger venues for visiting teams.
