Seven psychic kings secretly rule Japan in this expansive anime universe
In short: In the world of K, a student's ordinary life is shattered by a murder. As factions like the Red Clan's HOMRA and the Blue Clan's Scepter 4 clash, a hidden reality of psychic clans and powerful kings emerges, weaving a complex web of identity and vengeance across manga, anime, and games.
The K series, produced by GoHands and the seven-author collective GoRA, centers on a hidden political structure where seven Kings of psychic clans rule Japan. The narrative tension begins when Yashiro Isana, a student at Ashinaka High School, becomes the target of the Red Clan (HOMRA) and the Blue Clan (Scepter 4) following the murder of the pacifist Tatara Totsuka. The mystery deepens as the perpetrator bears an uncanny, identical resemblance to Yashiro himself.
The franchise is notable for its vast, interconnected media landscape. Beyond the original anime that premiered on October 5, 2012, the universe expanded through numerous manga prequels and spin-offs. These include 'K: Memory of Red', 'K: Stray Dog Story', and 'K: Days of Blue', alongside various light novels like 'K Side: Blue' and 'K Side: Red'. The storytelling is highly modular, with different manga series focusing on specific characters or factions, such as the Scepter 4 spin-off or the comedy-focused 'Gakuen K'.
The timeline of the series is marked by significant expansions, including the sequel film 'K: Missing Kings' released on July 12, 2014, and the 'K: Return of Kings' anime series that concluded the main arc in late 2015. The franchise even ventured into gaming with a visual novel by Otomate, allowing players to experience the story through an original character, Saya Konohana. This multifaceted approach ensures that the lore of the Seven Clans of Color remains a deeply layered experience for its audience.
