The ultimate NFL journeyman's path to becoming a league-leading specialist
In short: Most athletes dream of a steady path to stardom, but Kalif Raymond mastered the art of the professional pivot. After years of navigating practice squads and roster cuts across five different teams, he transformed from an undrafted free agent into a premier punt return specialist.
The trajectory of Kalif Raymond’s career is a masterclass in persistence within the volatile ecosystem of the NFL. Raymond established a diverse academic base at Holy Cross, having been raised by a Chinese parent and an African-American parent in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Between 2012 and 2015, he balanced track and gridiron sports, accumulating 4,059 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns, plus finishing as the runner-up in the 100-meter dash during the 2015 New England outdoor championships.
His professional entry was anything but linear. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Denver Broncos in 2016, Raymond spent years oscillating between active rosters and practice squads. He navigated the league's periphery with the Jets, Giants, and Titans, often being waived and re-signed in rapid succession. It wasn't until joining the Detroit Lions in 2021 that his career reached a turning point, culminating in a 2022 contract extension worth $9.5 million and a shift toward becoming a specialized elite.
The 'wow' factor of Raymond's journey lies in his 2024 season. Despite missing five games due to injury, he led the entire NFL in punt return yards. His ability to produce high-impact plays—such as a 90-yard punt return touchdown against his former team, the Titans—earned him second-team All-Pro honors. His career serves as a testament to the 'hidden' value of the practice squad, where players refine the niche skills necessary to eventually dominate a league's specialized roles.
Raymond's journey eventually led him to the Chicago Bears in 2026, where he signed a $5.1 million contract to reunite with former Detroit coach Ben Johnson. His story illustrates how a 'journeyman' status can actually be a competitive advantage, providing a diverse education in different schemes and styles before reaching the pinnacle of special teams excellence.
